Currently the R&D manager for a small, San Francisco Bay Area avionics company, Evan holds a PhD in mechanical engineering from University of Illinois, with a minor in music performance (flute). When Evan was nine months old, he was placed in the California foster care system because his mother, a drug addict and prostitute, was unfit to care for him. He was a loner in high school, but musically and academically gifted. In his junior year, he was arrested for vandalizing school property, but the judge agreed to dismiss the charges if Evan attended a private institution for troubled but promising students. Evan caused no further problems, and graduated on time, ultimately gaining admission to Stanford, where he received his bachelors in applied math. He's currently single, and lives in San Francisco. He recently reconciled with his mother, who is terminally ill with cervical cancer. Evan's father is unknown.
Mr. WuMr. Wu was born in 1390 in Nanjing, during the Ming dynasty. A bookkeeper for his employer, a large porcelain merchant, Wu embezzled a large quantity of gold ingots and paper currency from his employer, and then escaped with the money and his employer's secretary. In retribution, his employer burned down Wu's house, with Wu's wife and three young children inside. After a few months of being haunted by the cries of his dead children, Wu hanged himself, after which he secured an entry-level position in Satan's administration. Savvy and hard working, he was promoted to demon warlord of Haiti, where he improved quality control and substantially increased the yield of human souls. He was then assigned to open the new San Francisco office, this during the early days of the gold rush. Starting with only a few demons under his command, he built an impressive operation over the next 150 years, comprising more than 1000 demons, with an annual harvest of 12,000 - 15,000 souls. Wu is based in the Presidio, and reports to Belzebub, a senior demon responsible for the North American region.
BobThe CEO of a small avionics company, Bob is Evan's boss. Previously the general manager of a business unit of a large military contractor, Bob persuaded the contractor to spin-off the unit as a private company, the acquisition of which Bob financed through an LBO. The sudden entry of several foreign competitors into Bob's market, combined with the high interest expense of the debt service, pushed the company into the red. Bob immediately instituted severe cost controls, which prompted the resignation of the company's R&D manager, who Bob replaced with Evan, then a senior technical contributor at one of Bob's U.S. competitors. Bob lives in Hillsborough, and is married with two teenage children.
JillAfter graduating from high school in Australia, Jill moved to California to live with her sister, where she attended a two year program at a small medical college, earning a certificate as a medical technician. She then worked for two years in the cosmetic surgery business, during which one of the patient's died from complications from stomach liposuction. Jill was so traumatized by the event, that she quit her job, and retreated to her sister's home, where she emotionally recuperated for the next few months. At her sister's urging, she applied for an opening as a patient attendant at a San Francisco hospice, and got the job. With her wages and some financial help from her sister, she rented an apartment, where she likes to hold small get-togethers for her friends. She's single, and looking for a stable and successful guy.
BelzebubBelzebub is Mr. Wu's demon boss. According to Wu, Belzebub is "...the supreme commander of the Western expeditionary forces, and a member of Lucifer's executive committee. Prior to that, he was a senior member of the cherubim order before the fall. A marauder, destroyer, and invoker of lust among the clergy, he is a truly nasty and despicable demon."
The SuccubusBorn in Cambodia in 1528, the Succubus was a princess, one of the King's sisters. Hounded by the King to help manage the country's river commerce and, increasingly, its international trade through the Mekong Delta, the Succubus left the capital and settled in Angkor where, unencumbered, she could pursue her sexual interests. She died from the bite of a pit viper on her 29th birthday, at which time it was estimated her sexual conquests had exceeded 2000 men and women. In
Hell, she soon discovered much to her surprise a talent for management, and quickly wrested control of the Tasmanian territory from a moribund demon. As she consolidated her power, she drove westward with her hordes, a traveling bacchanal which few mortals could resist.
HectorAt 16, Hector smoked his first meth pipe, and all his promise as an athlete and student faded away. At 26 he was homeless, with virtually all his teeth missing from inflammatory gum disease. Wu discovered him, and made Hector his human liaison for small jobs where a demon's touch could be too heavy-handed. In return, Wu fixed Hector's teeth, and gave him a premier drug franchise in the City (Hector was allowed for the time being to keep his soul). Hector lives with his girlfriend, Maggie, in a San Francisco apartment.
The PilotLt. Colonel Rollins is a test pilot at Edwards Air Force Base in California. A 2001 graduate of the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School, Rollins is a member of the 411 Flight Test Squadron, and has logged more than 450 hours in the F22 Raptor, a fifth generation tactical fighter. He was chosen in 2009 to test a new generation stealth aircraft, code name "Zebra," that many believe will secure America's military air superiority through the next decade. The fighter jet employs a novel avionics system, including an intelligent flight control system (IFCS), which was developed, in part, by the firm run by Bob.
